Friday, Feb. 1, 2019 is the 10th annual World Read Aloud Day!!
Join with people of all ages around the world and celebrate the joy of story!
Pull a book off the shelf.
Visit a library.
Stop in a bookstore and find a new treasure.
A shared reading experience has always been one of my favorite activities in the classroom.
I’m thrilled to be able to read AN INCONVENIENT ALPHABET and talk to students at nine schools! Many thanks to author Kate Messner who has helped classrooms find authors to read and visit via Skype!
Here are a few links to enhance your read aloud day.
And here are a couple outstanding articles about the importance of story and reading aloud.
- Neil Gaiman on Why We Read and What Books do for the Human Experience
- What’s Going on in Your Child’s Brain When You Read Them a Story?
And if you absolutely can’t find someone to read to today…
there’s always tomorrow…
or the next day…
Why not every day!
Use #WorldReadAloudDay to share pictures from the day on social media.
thank you for posting this, I had no idea. i truly believe that one of the best things you can do for kids, and even adults who appreciate it, is to read aloud to them. it changes their worlds!

I wasn’t aware of this program until a year or two ago – it’s such a great opportunity for kids to connect with authors!
